We are so pleased to be in the gorgeous setting of Middlethorpe Hall. We have hired out the Barlow Room, a specialist room for events just like ours, a lovely quirky room where we are having a fabulous range of therapists and practitioners – one of our best yet.

With just a few hours until our event at The KP Club in Pocklington, it’s a privilege to be having our evening events in such lovely locations.

Why connect with other wellbeing businesses?

I’ve thought for a while, that you need to be selective about your networking (whatever form that takes). You could end up charging around the county, trying a ton out, forking out hundreds of pounds for the big referral groups and making slow progress.

You need a goal for the networking, if you are hoping for referrals, choose your group wisely.

Networking is not just about referrals, however, it may be that you want to learn about other businesses and how they operate, it maybe that you want to meet new people and have a social element to networking, it may be that you want to meet like-minded people or collaborate. It maybe that you are after training, workshops or business support (or all of the above!)

What ever your reasons, be clear about them. You may join different groups for different reasons. I go to a variety of groups: one group is very supportive, one group has a good social element and one group where I have much clearer business goals.

So why have I started my own wellbeing group?
There are a few reasons actually: I want to meet other people in the industry, I want to work with them through my own business, I think people working as therapists come at business in a different way to many other business owners and I think this group of business owners is unique in many ways. It can be a useful means of support for those of us who work hard to support others therapeutically.

Be Kind to Yourself

Am I a bit late with my New Year posting?!

You may not be surprised to hear that I feel sluggish in January, it takes me a while to come round after 2 weeks away from work. I completely switch off and enjoy the break. As a family we mainly share the tasks of Christmas, although I do heavily feature in the present buying department. We share housework, cooking, present wrapping and tidying up. I decided I wasn’t going to run myself into the ground taking on everything, not my idea of fun.

As I sit at my desk, I am taking my time to get motivated, I have my Himalayan salt lamp glowing away and my essential oils diffuser giving off lots of lovely scents of rosemary, peppermint and lemon – hoping it will help me with focus, concentration and memory! I have a Christmas voucher for a massage – all ready to be booked and enjoyed. I am not beating myself up about getting everything done this week. (The children only just went back to school today after all!) I spent yesterday creating a Vision Board with two colleagues – cutting and sticking lots of images and words that inspire me – I didn’t dwell on the whys and wherefores, I just got on with it and felt better for it.

I think what I am getting at is that I have spent a lot of time in the past making sure I had my survival package in place, a group of people I can call on in a professional capacity to get me through – therapists, business support professionals, coaches, yoga teachers etc – people I can rely upon, I don’t have to think too hard, I know I can contact them to get me through, whatever.

This is what the Choice Indulgence Evenings are all about – bringing together people you can call upon for support whenever you need it, as well as feeling pampered and looked after.

Let Love be Your Energy

As the year is winding down, it has put me in reflective mood.

I caught the end of Radio 2’s ‘Pause for Thought’ this morning, I missed most of it, however, the contributor was summing up and said the words, “Let Love be Your Energy” and it struck me, this is what moves me forward. I have found untold strength and energy from the love of my adopted children, battled negativity from every turn – with the thought – I don’t care what you think of me – when it comes to my business, I just want people to take care of themselves, and for my family, I just want you to understand and consider how you treat people.

It feels like my business is always evolving, I change what I offer and sometimes who I work with. However, the common thread through everything I do is ‘support’. Working one to one with counselling clients, offering business support to therapeutic business owners, providing therapy mini-sessions through the Choice Indulgence Evening and running DIY Pamper Evenings and Parties. I feel like I will always be someone who is motivated and enthused by change and project work (perhaps why running events appeals to me). I will, however, always offer support.

Sometimes I forget about my extensive experience and wonder why I am good at what I do and why I like change. I think a little resume of my career explains this a little!

– Teaching ICT, Business Studies and Sociology in 3 different secondary schools plus mentoring new teachers

– Events management

As well as my voluntary work as a Girl Guides Leader, working as a counsellor for the blind and partially sighted, working on a rape crisis help line, and mentoring ‘looked after’ children.

I’ve done a lot and I have moved around. Being self-employed has been the thing I have stuck at for the longest, mainly because I am in charge of my own destiny. I don’t have to answer to anyone (except the tax man) and if I don’t like what I do, I can change it!

So, let love be your energy, and it be the thing that motivates you.

Are you missing a trick when it comes to exhibiting at an event?

Do you or would you like to exhibit at events?

Like fairs, trade shows, exhibitions, conferences, expos etc.

I remember when I first did an event, it felt quite scary! Usually, I worked behind my computer, using social media as a way of meeting people, or word of mouth and some networking here and there, I was going to set my business up as a shopfront with no products (!) – finding a way of making counselling a thing that people would come and talk to me about wasn’t easy – selling counselling always felt a bit ‘wrong’ anyway and as for people coming over to me, ahem!!

I quickly realised I would have to do something different to get people over to chat to me. Here are my tops tips to capture people’s imaginations and get them over.

Of course there are basics such as:

– Having a table cloth that covers your table.
– Having your business cards and information leaflets.
– Having a name tag.
– Having holders for your cards and leaflets
– Catching the eye of people as they walk round and smiling at them.

There are lots of other tactics you could try

– Have a compelling offer that is only available if they book at that event or a short time period after.

– Have a competition with a worthwhile prize.

– Have drinks and/or snacks on the table that people will stop and help themselves to.

– Have an object or sign that catches the eye on your table, I have heard of people using tree branches with cards hanging off them, a wheelbarrow of beer, a big model of an animal, a game etc etc

– Offer something practical to do, I love to use essential oils with people so I invite them to make an anti-stress roller or calming room spray. We are busy making something together, chatting, perhaps having a joke, it relaxes people, hopefully they remember me!

– Understand that all events have a ‘flow’ a way that visitors snake around a room in one direction – you may not be able to change where your stand is but you can try and make the best of it.

– Capture visitors details using your prize draw etc.

– Always follow up quickly after an event – timetable it in your diary!
